VOTE!

Filed under: Politics — don @ 7:41 am

The subject says it all. You should vote for the person you feel would do the best job for your state/city/country. Of course if you vote Democrat you will probably burn in hell but itsn’t that a small price to pay?

Flip flop, flip flop

Filed under: Politics — don @ 5:19 pm

John Kerry is the gift that keeps on giving.  Not only did his flip flopping in 2003 help Bush win his second term now he’s trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the Democrats in 2006.

If you’ve been under a rock for the last few days here’s a summary.  On Monday Kerry said this while talking to a group at Pasadena City College:

“you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well.

“And if you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq,”

Of course this touched off a firestorm from the Repubs demanding an apology so on Tuesday Kerry said this:

“I apologize to no one”

Finally today after some pretty strong pressure from other Dems Kerry said this:

I personally apologize to any service member, family member, or American who was offended.”

Flip flop, flip flop.  At least we know the drill.  I read a quote by Dick Cheney who told a crowd:

“He was for the joke before he was against it.”

Now the part that makes me a bit miffed.  Democrats are saying “Kerry is not on the ballot so why are the Republicans focusing on him?”

Let’s try this then.  George W. Bush is not on the ballot so why are the Democrats focusing on him?

The reason is the Democrats plan for Iraq is the opposite of whatever Bush is doing.  Never mind that to cut and run would leave the US in  grave danger.  They really don’t care as long as they get the power.  What happened to the party of Harry Truman and John Kennedy?

Firefox 2.0 revisited

Filed under: Geek — don @ 3:57 pm

Firefox 2.0 not-the-beta is coming out tomorrow. It’s actually available at their ftp site if you just can’t wait. Yeah, I’m running it now. I’m sure it will be a lot more stable than the beta I tried earlier. I haven’t explored it but it’s supposed to have a better RSS reader now. It also has anti-phishing detection.

Here’s the Windows version and Linux version.

HDDVR – DirecTV style

Betty has had an HD DirecTV box for a while now and she loves it.  It’s based on Tivo so it’s easy to use and she was able to go from my first Tivo hand-me-down to this with no trouble.

I decided if I’ve got a 55″ TV I should at least see how it looks with HD so I started checking DirecTV to see what they had.  They no longer offer the Tivo based unit that Betty has but have created their own.  They must have paid Tivo a pretty good chunk of money to get out of the deal they had with them.

The new DVR(HR20) works very well but it’s just not Tivo.  The main thing I miss is being able to 30 second skip.  It has a 30 second FF but it isn’t instant like Tivo.  It also won’t handle off-air HD for another month when DirecTV will roll out a software upgrade.  They forgot to mention that at Circuit City when I bought it but it didn’t take long to find out.

It’s not a bad machine but I did get spoiled with Tivo.

Nothing new

Filed under: Nothing — don @ 7:00 am

I know it’s been a month since my last entry.  That should show you just how boring my life is right now.  I’ll try to catch you up on everyone.

Ann is still living with us.  She cleaned her room last week.  That probably deserved an entry when she did it since it’s quite rare.

Jenny is living with us now.  She got a job last week at Old Navy.  I think she gets a discount but I’m not really the Old Navy type.

Michelle is living with a family of a high school friend in Simi Valley and working at a fitness center.  I hope she follows through on her dream of being a chef but time will tell.

Betty is still going to her cardiac rehab exercise classes 3 times a week.  We hope she’ll be able to ride on my bike sometime soon.

I’m still working 6-3 making satellites.  I like to think the US is a little safer because of what I do.  At least that’s what our customer tells us and I have no reason to doubt it.

Heather and Jocelyn have their own blogs so you can find out what’s up with them.

Fryin’ Turkeys

We got a turkey fryer about a month ago for half price. Today we finally used it. It took about 40 minutes to fry a 13 lb turkey and is it good! It was dark brown on the outside but moist and tender on the inside. I think I’ve found the best way to do turkey. I wonder how a tri-tip would be?

Uploading with a thumbnail

Filed under: Geek — don @ 5:43 pm

Here’s a nifty picture that I’m uploading using the thumbnail.

Firefox_wallpaper.png

All you have to do is left click on the picture in the “Browse” when you get it uploaded and choose “Using Thumbnail” instead of “Using Original” . You also want to choose “Linked to Image”. Then send it to the editor. You can also drag it to the editor.
