What’s Happening? Part 2

Near the end of last year my company was looking for new people to help build our antennas.  I was thinking our son-in-law Patrick was a smart person who learned quickly so I talked to my boss about bringing him in to see if he would be able to help.  He started around the beginning of December and has worked out very well.  Everyone likes him and thinks he is a great worker and asset to the company.

I stopped riding my bike to work because I was car pooling with Patrick.  We took my F150 4X4 most of the time but that thing gets terrible gas mileage.  I knew we needed something that would do better.

I started looking at information on electric cars.  Daryl has had his Volt for several years and really loves it.  I thought that might be an option and then I looked at the Nissan Leaf.

The Leaf is electric only which means if the battery runs out you have to either tow it or recharge it and there’s no gas engine to do it for you.  But it also has an 87 mile range for the older versions and 107 miles for the 2016.  I figured 87 miles would be enough since I could drive it the 30 miles to work and then charge it back up while there.

We looked at a 2013 Leaf that had 18,000 miles but it didn’t have the Level 3 socket which allows you to charge to 80% in 30 minutes.  I felt if I was going to have one I might want to take it to someplace like Santa Barbara where I could do the Level 3 charge and then come home the same day.

We went to the Nissan dealer to see if they had any used Leafs but they didn’t.  I started talking to them about what a new one costs.  Turns out when you buy a new electric car you get a $7,500 tax credit from the US and a $2,500 rebate from CA.  Nissan was also giving a $4,000 rebate and since I belonged to a credit union I got an additional $3,500 off.  That’s $17,500 off the sticker price.  That’s close to 50% off.  I figured I might as well buy new and that way I got the Level 3 socket.

I’ve been driving it for several months and I have to say I love it.  Since I got it I have only had to stop at the gas station once when I drove Betty’s Camry on a day it was low on gas.  Since we have the solar panels on the roof most of the electric is “free”.  It’s not exactly but very close.

I love being free from gas so much I’m contemplating trading in the Camry for a Volt.  I would still get the $10,000 in tax rebates and credits on a Volt.  I would definitely want to do it before the end of the year so I could take the Federal credit off my taxes next year.  We will see how things go.

New Car

We’ve had the Hyundai Sonata since 2004 and Betty figured it was time to replace it.

We were thinking about getting another Hyundai but then Daryl mentioned that we should take a look at the Toyota Camry Hybrid. It’s the top rated Sedan on CR now with a 93. The only vehicle above it is the Tesla but we don’t have $100k for a car. We also didn’t want to spend $30,000 on a car but we were willing to spend 2/3 of that so I started looking at used ones.

Last night I found a 2011 with under 22,000 miles for about $4,000 less than all the other ones of that basic year I had been seeing. The only problem was it was in Carlsbad which is near San Diego and about 110 miles from home.

We decided it was worth it to drive down there so today Betty, Jenny, Patrick and I went down and we went ahead and bought it.

Here’s some pics.

Winternationals… for real

A few months ago I made a post titled Winternationals but it was really the NHRA Finals that I went to in November. They both happen at Pomona Raceway in California but one is the end of the season and one is the beginning.

Yesterday Betty and I went to the true Winternationals and I got a lot of photos. They are all in my gallery now. I didn’t post the full size pics because it would have taken forever to upload them. The ones there are 1/4 size. If you happen to see one you would like the full size pic for just let me know.

Winternationals!

Heading out soon. If I remember I’ll post some photos.

I remembered.

Here’s some video I took. It’s so amazing to me how fast these pro category vehicles go. Here’s a couple of Pro Stock motorcycles. They typically run low 7 seconds to high 6 seconds.

And here’s a couple of Pro Stock cars. These run in the mid to high 6 seconds.

A couple of Alcohol Funny cars. These run in the mid 5 seconds.

And finally a couple of Top Fuel Funny Cars. These run 1000 ft in around 4 seconds.

The Top Fuel cars used to run a whole quarter mile but because of an accident that killed a driver last year they backed off to 1000 ft. They still hit over 300 MPH. Yesterday we saw the fastest 1000 ft run ever for a Top Fuel dragster at 321 MPH in 3.8 seconds. They could probably improve on that today. These cars are the fastest accelerating vehicles in the world. Here’s some interesting facts about them.

NHRA Finals

I love the drag races but it’s been since I lived in Tucson since I’ve been. Finally I made it out to the Finals in Pomona today. I’ve got the pictures on my Gallery.

Driving Museum

Today Betty and I went to the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo. I know about it because my boss held an anniversary party for 6 people there last month. They have around 60 cars and they pretty much all run. On Sundays you can get a ride in one of the vehicles they have out. Today they had a 1937 Packard that was used back then to do things like take stars to movie premieres. They also had a 57 Chevy, a Studebaker Station Wagon and a Studebaker Avanti but we wanted to ride in the Packard. It was pretty cool

In the museum they have docents walking around who will let you sit in any car there except a few they don’t own. We sat in a few cool ones including a Deloren. See my Gallery for my pics and Betty has some more pictures in her Gallery(or will soon).

Can you say mid-life crisis?

Sure, I knew you could. The Mazda didn’t work out but I did learn a valuble lesson. You would think at 51 I would have already learned it but obviously not. The Mazda started losing oil pressure at idle when it got warm. It didn’t do that when I first bought it so I’m pretty sure the person I got it from doctored it.

I decided that was my last time buying a vehicle that didn’t have a warrenty. So today we went and got a car that Betty can also drive and it’s got a warrenty. It’s a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. It’s something we can actually drive a long ways without having to worry about. I was nervous about taking that Mazda further than about 25 miles.

There are a couple of pictures in the gallery. Yes that’s a ding on the front. We did a Carfax report and it came back clean so I believe it’s ok. Besides, it’s got a warrenty.
