New Phone

I’ve had my Samsung S4 for 2 years now so I figured it was time for an upgrade.

I gave a fleeting thought to an iPhone but figured there’s really nothing that new about them that would drag me back to Apple.

I’ve been very happy with my Android so I decided to go with a Samsung S6.

It’s very similar to the S4 and the S5 that Betty got about a month ago with a few extra perks.

1)  It has an honest to goodness fingerprint reader.

2)  It has built in induction charging.

3)  It’s made out of metal and glass instead of plastic.

4)  It has a REALLY high resolution screen, much more than the iPhone 6.

5)  It’s got a REALLY good camera that takes low light photos very well and will take 4K video (although I don’t know what to watch it on other than the phone).

6)  It has an 8-core CPU vs the 2 core iPhone. (although the 2 core iPhone CPU is pretty good)

All of that plus I’m not shoehorned into the App Store and what Apple thinks I should use.

I’ve heard the new Samsungs are really locked down but I unrooted my S4 not long after I rooted it and never missed it.  I have a friend at work who says he could never be happy with not being able to change ROMS.  I guess if you live for doing that it’s understandable but if I want to geek out I have my computer.

I’ll play around with the new phone and report anything that’s super cool.

Michelle turned 22 on Thursday so on Wednesday she invited a bunch of us to Disneyland. There were 16 of us that made it. The pictures are posted in my Gallery.

Moon Pic

Here’s a picture I took with the new camera. I was quite amazed that you need a really fast shutter speed to take a picture of a full moon at full zoom on my 55-200 lens. I think this was taken at 1/1600th and probably 4.5 f-stop. I originally was taking them at slow shutter speeds and all I was getting was a bright disc and you couldn’t see the features. I like this one a lot.

Winternationals… for real

A few months ago I made a post titled Winternationals but it was really the NHRA Finals that I went to in November. They both happen at Pomona Raceway in California but one is the end of the season and one is the beginning.

Yesterday Betty and I went to the true Winternationals and I got a lot of photos. They are all in my gallery now. I didn’t post the full size pics because it would have taken forever to upload them. The ones there are 1/4 size. If you happen to see one you would like the full size pic for just let me know.

New Camera

I’ve wanted to get a REAL camera for ages. The last real camera I had was a Minolta SRT101 SLR 35mm film camera. I’ve had lots of toy cameras since then with the closest to real being my Olympus C-785 Ultra Zoom. It has a 10X Optical lens and it’s got some manual control but it isn’t SLR.

I finally decided it was time so last week I bought a Nikon D5000.

It’s not quite professional grade but it’s very close. Professionals would say it’s a great starter camera but for me it’s great.

To show the power of a real SLR I took a few pics the other night. This one is taken outside at night when it was completely dark. I used the built-in flash so you can see just how dark it was. The F-stop was 3.5 and the shutter was 1/60 second.

This next one was taken at the same time except it was on a tripod and the F stop was 3.8 with a 25 second shutter speed.

You can see some lights in the shot but you would almost swear it was daylight. Look around the middle on the left side of center and you can see some trails from a car.

Here’s a pano made with photos from the new camera and Autostitch. Richard first showed me Autostitch. Pretty cool free program to make Panoramas.

I think I’ll be happy with this camera for a long time to come.
