Faster…

I’ve had DSL since about the time DSL was available.  I think I first got it from Pacific Bell back in 1994 or 95.  At that time everyone else was using dial up and my DSL was 1.5 MB/S which was screaming.  I’ve kept DSL since then and have upgraded the speed twice to where I’m now at 6 MB/S.

I don’t have anything against the DSL but I decided it’s time to get rid of the land line and since that’s how DSL comes into the house I am going to get rid of it too.  I don’t see any need to continue paying for a home phone when everyone has a cell with unlimited calls between each other and free long distance.

What I’ll replace it with is Time Warner RoadRunner Cable Internet service.  They have a 10 MB/S and a 15 MB/S and since the company pays for it I’m getting the 15.

The installer will be out on Saturday so I’ll let you know how it goes.

This should help the Netflix streaming a little but the VUDU will be the most helped.  If you haven’t heard of VUDU it’s similar to Netflix in the home streaming but it’s pay per view and it’s also high def.  I doubt we’ll use it much but with the price of movies these days it’s a lot cheaper to just wait and stream the high def to the LCD TV.

Fresh Logic Atlas

I’ve been checking Google maps every so often to see if they have gotten better satellite photos of certain places like Cuba, NY and a few others. Once in a while they improve and you can actually see most of the country in decent resolution but there is still a bit left to go.

Today I found the new site that has the regular Google images plus it has what they call Birds Eye. It has 4 different views of every place I’ve checked so far including Hill St, Cuba. The images are better than most of the Google ones. Here’s an example

First a pic using the Google satellite image:

And now the Birds Eye view:

Check out some other places. Some are better and some are about the same. I thought it would be interesting to most everyone.

Geek Alert!!!

Filed under: Geek — don @ 12:46 am

Ok, this is one of the geekiest things I’ve ever done but other geeks will love it. I recently got a Mac Mini so that I could try to create some apps for the iPhone. I might be able to make a few bucks or not but I know a lot of people have quit their day job because of it. Since I don’t have a day job at the moment I’ve nothing to lose.

Anyways, this is not about that. This is about VirtualBox. Daryl told me about it a while ago and I had played with it and a similar thing called VM Ware.

I got to thinking about the possibility of installing it on my Mac and sure enough there was a version for it. Here’s a picture of my Mac’s screen with a Windows 7 VB and and an Ubuntu VB running at the same time.

My propeller is spinning at about 8,000 RPM.

Here’s an update showing I added Windows XP.

And one more update showing I added Suse and Windows 98.

Go Ashton!

It will probably be over by the time you read this but today it’s been kind of interesting. Ashton Kutcher has challenged CNN to see who gets to 1 million Twitter followers first. It’s been on Yahoo and there is even a site that is updating it live. I’m pulling for Ashton.

It’s Alive!!!

Filed under: Geek — don @ 9:19 am

Ok, it was alive before but now it’s running OS X 10.3.9. It took a lot of work to get it there but I won’t go into the details now. Maybe in an additional post that I will call Upgrading my iMac or maybe just another page. Here it is as it’s booting up.

$5 Apple

Filed under: Geek — don @ 6:01 pm

I’ve wanted a Mac for a while but I couldn’t justify spending much on one. I finally looked on Ebay and found an old iMac located out in Oxnard and the bid was at $2.25. I bid $2.50 and put in a max bid of $5.00. I didn’t think there was any chance but a few days later I was told I won. The guy who had it sent me a message asking if I was going to pick it up or did I want him to ship it. I said I would drive out on Saturday and so today Betty and I did.

He said it turned on but he didn’t have a mouse or keyboard so he didn’t know if it worked. When I got it home I plugged in a mouse and turned it on. It works like a champ. I will need to get a keyboard but that should be around $5 too. Not really sure what I’ll do with it but I’ve been wanting to relearn the Mac OS so this is perfect.
