New Phone

Filed under: Cool Stuff — don @ 7:50 pm

Yay!  I bit the bullet and got the Samsung S4.

Since the company pays for my phone they allowed us to get whichever we wanted.  We won’t be able to upgrade for 2 years so I hope the S4 lasts that long.

It’s a pretty cool phone.  It has all kinds of nifty features that the iPhone (and most other smart phones) doesn’t have.

I’m not sure which is my favorite of the “cool” features and it’s going to take a little getting used to not having an iPhone but I’m glad I made the switch.

As I discover neat things about it I’ll put them in the comments.

In the meantime here’s a link to the hype

New Car

We’ve had the Hyundai Sonata since 2004 and Betty figured it was time to replace it.

We were thinking about getting another Hyundai but then Daryl mentioned that we should take a look at the Toyota Camry Hybrid. It’s the top rated Sedan on CR now with a 93. The only vehicle above it is the Tesla but we don’t have $100k for a car. We also didn’t want to spend $30,000 on a car but we were willing to spend 2/3 of that so I started looking at used ones.

Last night I found a 2011 with under 22,000 miles for about $4,000 less than all the other ones of that basic year I had been seeing. The only problem was it was in Carlsbad which is near San Diego and about 110 miles from home.

We decided it was worth it to drive down there so today Betty, Jenny, Patrick and I went down and we went ahead and bought it.

Here’s some pics.

S4 or iPhone 5?

It about time to update my phone again. I’ve had iPhones since a few months after the first one came out and I’ve always been very satisfied.

Last year my company took over paying for my phone so we split it off from the family. Now my 2 year contract is up and I’ve got a decision. I heard through the grapevine that we were no longer going to carry 3 different carriers and going to go solely with Verizon.

I’ve been with AT&T since my first cell phone back in the 1990’s when PacBell first introduced a digital cell phone. Our first phone was a Nokia 2190.Nokia 2190

It was big and bulky but it was true digital. Over the next 10 years we had Nokia and Samsung phones.

Now that Apple is not the leader anymore I’m very tempted to go with a Samsung S4. The S4 is being touted as the iPhone killer but then quite a few other phones got that moniker yet didn’t really kill anything.

Here’s a link to an S4 review.

I would be interested in other people’s opinions. I know all about the iPhone but I’ve never owned an Android Smartphone. I do have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet and I like it. Betty and all the girls here have androids and they seem to like them. I need to make a decision fairly soon.

RIP Alice

Filed under: Family — don @ 9:10 pm

Betty’s mom passed away last Monday.

She’s been living a life that hasn’t been very enjoyable for quite a few years so we are glad her suffering is over but it’s always hard to say goodbye to someone who’s been such a large part of your life.

When Betty and I met in 1993 her mom lived in the house Betty grew up in. It was in Van Nuys just a short distance from downtown Van Nuys. In 1993 she was still quite good but it was plain she was getting nearer to the time when she would need help.

I’m not sure exactly when but I believe it was around 2000 that she moved in with Betty’s youngest sister Donna. Donna lived in Santa Clarita which is about 25 miles north of Los Angeles. She lived in a double wide trailer with her 2 sons and one daughter. The sons and daughter eventually moved out and it was just Donna and Alice.

Alice began showing signs of Alzheimer’s in the early 2000s (probably around 2003) but her health was still okay. Over the last 5 years she’s gotten worse and it was close to a year since she had been out of the house.

Last weekend Donna said she stopped eating and was much worse than she had seen her. Monday morning Donna talked to her and she opened her eyes, then closed them for good.

She is survived by 4 children listed in age from oldest down. Cliff is married to Gloria and they have 2 sons and a daughter. Lillian was never married. Betty was married twice and has 3 daughters. Donna was married to Dennis Price (who passed away last year) and has 2 sons and a daughter.

This was taken at Forest Lawn. Next Thursday there will be a memorial service.

WUHU_Tweet

As most of you know I have a “personal weather station”. That means I have weather instruments installed around my house so I can tell what the weather is at any given moment. I bought my first one back in 2007.

For a weather buff like me it wasn’t enough to know what the weather is like I also like to be able to see what it was like over the day or last few days or weeks, or even months.

Weather Underground is a weather site that features weather reports from all sorts of places. One of those is many, many personal weather stations. When I got my weather station I started looking for how those personal weather stations (PWS from here on out) were able to post their weather.

I learned that there are various pieces of software that can do this but the one that seemed best was one called WUHU for Weather Underground Heavyweather Uploader. Heavyweather is a piece of software that comes with LaCrosse weather stations which is what I started with. You run that software which saves the weather data to your hard drive every few minutes and then you run the WUHU software and it uploads it to WU. I ran like this for a while and then I learned that WUHU could run by itself without having to run the Heavyweather software. I’ve been running in what is called “serial mode” ever since.

A few years ago when Twitter got popular some people started asking about some way to use WUHU to not only upload to the weather services but also to Twitter. I had played around with Twitter and I knew how to write programs using Microsoft’s Visual Basic so I took a crack at it.

I created a program that I call WUHU_Tweet. WUHU has a feature where you can call another program at any interval you want. I created WUHU_Tweet to use this feature. WUHU calls my program and inserts the weather data into some placeholder “variables” and then publishes the Tweet.

I made it available to the WUHU community and it’s fairly popular. I’m not sure how many people are using it now but I have seen people in several countries plus quite a few in the US using it. I have been using it for several years and so far it has made roughly 31,200 tweets.

About a month ago someone asked if it would be possible to post weather reports to Facebook. I knew you could always make your Twitter posts go to Facebook but I felt it would be better if you had some control over how often you did it. Someone told me about a Facebook app called Selective Tweets which allows you to make a Tweet go to Facebook by just adding #fb to the Tweet. You can see it in action on webtrafficgeeks.com

I modified my program and was able to make it so you put in a number as a counter which would then put #fb onto every nth tweet. I tested this out on my Facebook account. I started with twice a day but Donna and a few other people were complaining about it so I cut it down to once a day. Some were still complaining so I stopped it altogether.

I guess the experiment worked but the concept was a failure. I’m not going to remove the feature, because it worked, but I will not be posting weather tweets to my Facebook page anymore.

Nothing to See Here

Filed under: Family — don @ 9:32 am

It’s been almost 2 months since I made a post, well, 6 weeks anyways.

The problem is there’s been nothing really post worthy for those last 6 weeks. At least nothing that deserved more than a mention on Facebook.

Oh sure, Betty is still dealing with medical issues (as she will be forever) and so is Michelle (hopefully not forever) and Jen is Jen and Ann is Ann.

I think the biggest thing that’s happened in the last few weeks is Jenny driving to Ventura for jury duty for a few weeks. She would have had jury duty a few miles away but her residence of record is still Simi Valley. I don’t feel sorry for her having to do that drive and she did say she enjoyed it. I think she was just making lemonade and they could use the eggs.

We did get a bit of good news mixed with bad about Michelle last week. The good news is she is cancer free but the bad is she is going in for surgery this Tuesday to remove most of her “parts” she would have liked to keep. I’ll let her elaborate.

Another good thing is Betty and I will be traveling to Arizona and Wisconsin next month to see family. I need to see my mom and it’s always great to see the other Phoenix folk. Dale is supposed to also be in the area so hopefully we can see him too. We saw Heather and her brood a few months ago in Southern Cal but I always love to see them anytime.

After spending a few days in Arizona we will head to Kenosha to see the newest member of the Weiss family. Eric and Jocelyn just moved out of that old house and into a nice apartment. I don’t know what we will be doing for the 4 or 5 days we will be there but Joce says she has plans. Anytime with the kids and grandkids is fine no matter what we’re doing.

I knew mom would like an update so I figured I could get this in and then when we get back from our trip next month I can tell you all about it.

Heading East

Filed under: Family — don @ 4:21 pm

Not me, not yet. Michelle is going to visit Jocelyn and Eric and the boys in a couple of days. I think she’s going to spend almost a week.

I had wanted to go with her but a few things are keeping me here for a bit longer. Maybe I can visit after they start getting snow. I do love me some Wisconsin snow. But for sure I’m going to go out before the end of the year. Hopefully Betty will be able to go with me.
