Barbie’s Car

I’ve been thinking about how dangerous it is to ride a bike when it’s raining. Especially a bike that has 140 horsepower. I’ve also been thinking about how uncomforatable it is to be soaked. With those 2 things in mind I started looking for a small car to drive the 28 miles to and from work that got good gas mileage. I’ve got a Ford F-150 but it doesn’t know how to pass a gas station.

Last week I started looking in earnest for a wet weather car and yesterday I found it. It’s a 1991 Mazda Miata. It’s not fast but it is kinda fun and it will keep me dry. It seems to be in pretty good condition for a 15 year old car. We’ll see how it goes.

  1. Don, Sounds like a good idea. The Miata’s are cute cars.

I wondered what kind of riding gear you normally wear. Do you have leathers or do you just wear a helmet? Curious because I am thinking of getting some riding gear for the cooler weather and wondered if you had any suggestions.

  2. I normally wear a mesh jacket that has padding and a removable liner. It’s made for riding bikes but when it’s cold I need to wear a sweater underneath. There’s all kinds of cold weather gear. My main concern is riding in the rain. It’s just too easy to spin that tire on wet pavement.

  3. Well, I am glad safety is your main concern. I love the Miata-but think it is cuter in yellow! 🙂

  5. I don’t know what this particular one gets yet but they are reported to get between 25 and 30 mpg.

  6. Every time I hear one of you thinking “safety”, I breathe more easily.
