Sad

Filed under: Life — don @ 6:37 pm

I find this graphic to be how I feel even though I know we aren’t quite lost as a country. We still have the election in November where we can take our country back from the liars and turncoats who are trying to take it.

What’s up?

I’ve been ticketed by the blog police so I guess I better respond.

Nothing really new or extremely exciting happening around here. Since my last post some things have happened but most of you know about everything. Here’s a synopsis.

In December Ann moved into her own apartment. We are all very happy for her as this is the first time she’s been on her own. She moved into a one bedroom apartment that is about 2 miles from us. That means she’s close enough to take to bus if she needs a family fix. I think she’s got most everything she needs in her place now including broadband DSL from DSL Extreme.

Earlier this month Dale came to visit Southern California. You can read his description on his blog but I will add that it was GREAT having him here. The first weekend he and I went to the Getty Center on Saturday and the Reagan Library on Sunday. Neither place was all that much fun itself but spending time with Dale would have been enjoyable doing anything.

Last Monday Dale, Betty and I went to Universal Studios. I hadn’t been there in close to 16 years. It has changed a bit but the tram tour is very similar to what it was. The main difference is you don’t stop and get out now. They have added a few rides and shows and updated the others. The Animal Actors show still has the dog go backstage and bring out articles of clothing that a young boy is supposedly thinking about. Of course a bra is still the last thing. I guess they figure that never gets old.

After Universal we stopped by Dianna’s parents house to see if there was anything we wanted/needed from the estate. There were 4 of Betty’s paintings that we took to add to the one that was given to me many, many years ago. Then we went home, had dinner and said bye to Dale. Hopefully we will see him at least once more before he leaves SoCal.

The one thing different this year is we didn’t make the trip to Arizona yet because of Betty’s sciatic nerve issue. We are hoping we can go over in February when Dave and Lisa visit. We will have to see how she’s doing but I’m hoping.

Merry Christmas!

I just realized I didn’t even change the theme since Halloween. I haven’t done much exciting since the last post except for a trip to Pismo for a day. Ann is moving out which is quite exciting for her. We will miss her but it’s a big step that we are glad she’s making. Maybe we’ll have all the kids gone by the time I retire for real but I’m not holding my breath.

Percy and Precious

Filed under: Life — don @ 7:49 am

If you ever look at our Netflix queue you’ll notice our last 2 movies were Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief(say that 3 times fast) and Precious.

I doubt you could find 2 more different movies but I liked them both about equally.

Percy is a lighthearted tale of a young man who learns he is a demigod. A demigod is of course a child of a god and a mortal in Greek mythology. The story follows Percy as he learns of his “secret” and has to battle and work with other demigods to clear his name in the theft of Zeus’s lightning bolt. It had some great special effects and overall was an entertaining flick. Don’t expect to see anything deep but if you liked Lord of the Rings you’ll probably like this.

Precious on the other hand is a very, very dark movie about a subject that hasn’t been covered much. It’s about a 16 year old girl who’s father has raped her many times and impregnated her twice. The story follows the girl named Precious as she learns to fight back a little from her controlling mother and terrible past. Precious is portrayed by newcomer Gabourey Sidibe. Her mother is played by comedian Mo’Nique who I was not familiar with. Mo’Nique won the Oscar for Supporting Actress and she definitely deserved it. The movie was well acted and gives you a look at a side of life nobody would want to experience. I highly recommend it if you enjoy deep movies with a message.

We’re going on a vacation, kindof

Betty and I have been wanting to go back to Las Vegas for a short vacation. The last time we were there was our 5th wedding anniversary so it’s been almost 12 years. I get emails from a thing called Travelzoo which has good prices on various vacation type stuff. It had a deal for a room at the Signature by MGM for about half price. We were going to stay there but then we happened to look at a the Luxor and one of the rooms has a Spa built in. Betty really liked that idea and I’ve always wanted to stay at the Luxor so that’s where we will be going. We plan to drive over on August 29th and then back to LA on the 31st.

The day after we made reservations there Jocelyn contacted me about them coming out to Phoenix. She said they wanted to do it between Sep 1st and 8th and did I want to come over then? Heck yes we did!

We started thinking about where we would stay and what we would do and thought we could ask Heather to put us up for a few nights and maybe stay in a hotel for a few nights. I am a firm believer in the old saying that house guests are like fish. Both start smelling after a few days. I dislike asking someone to put us up for very long.

Then the night before last I was talking to Heather about the trip when it hit me that we could maybe see the Grand Canyon on our way from Vegas to Phoenix. I was looking at options and we could stay in the park, stay in Williams, or stay in Flagstaff. I’m leaning towards a night in the park but we’ll see.

Last night we looked at prices to see the Blue Man Group while in Vegas. It’s almost $100 a ticket. Not sure if we’ll do that but since Betty really wants to see them and we’ve never done a show in Vegas we probably will.

This will be the first time that just the 2 of us have gone on a trip this long. We are looking forward to it. And of course right in the middle of it is our 17th anniversary and Joce and Erics something something anniversary.

Fort Tejon

Last Monday Betty and I drove up to Fort Tejon which is of course in the Tejon pass. We spent about an hour walking around looking at the building, grounds, and stuff. There isn’t really a lot to see but I somehow managed to take over 100 pictures. You can find them in my Gallery.
