OFF WITH HIS FOOT!

Filed under: Life — don @ 5:05 pm

I’m not sure who I get to blame.  I don’t know if it’s from mom’s side or dad’s side but it didn’t just happen.

By now you’re asking yourself “What is he talking about?”   I’m talking about my lower pods, my lower appendage ends, in other words, my feet.

It seems I have been blessed  in one way in that I don’t have flat feet.  Although that has probably saved me from early foot pain, I do suffer from the opposite affliction.  I have “high arches”.  In fact the podiatrist said they are unusually high.

A little background is in order.  For the last year or so I’ve had a pain on the side of my foot that comes and goes.  It mainly hurt only if I was walking but lately it’s gotten to the point where it hurt most of the time.  The pain has also started radiating up to my ankle so I decided it was time to see a Dr.  My GP didn’t have a clue so he referred me to a pod doc.  I saw him today and that’s when he told me my problem.  He gave me an injection of cortisone and made a temporary cushion.   I guess those of us with extremely high arches tend to walk on the outside of the foot which creates above normal stress.

The cure is orthotics.  So now I have an appointment to get my foot lathered in plaster of Paris.  I’ll keep you informed.

  1. Goodness, I don’t like the title here. Hope it doesn’t come to that! 😉 Doesn’t it suck to get old?

  2. Blame the parents! That’s what usually happens.

Don’t know where bad feet came from. Dick and Dale had flat feet–Dale’s so bad that the sides rubbed his ankles, unless we put insoles in them. Daryl’s were wide, like Dad’s, and I always thought that you had the only perfect ones. How sad! When I was young, I wore a AAA, with a AAAAA heel, and Dad had to have EEE. What a mixed up bunch.

You know that also, Dad had O negative blook and I am AB positive; that has made for some interesting combinations!

  3. Ouch. That sounds like it hurts. Yes, getting older is no fun. See my blog for my latest.

  4. I got orthotics about a year ago for a different problem (inflamation in the ball of my foot — the orthotic was designed to take pressure off that area).

However, now I have another problem with pain in the arch of the same foot — sounds like it might be related to your problem! I’m thinking of going back to the podiatrist to see if my orthotics need to be “adjusted” (which probably means remade for the full cost again!).

I’m OK if I take it easy, but my regimen of 3x/week basketball plus hikes on Sundays doesn’t let it heal.

At my age, the slower healing time means that I would be out of shape by the time I fully recovered and probably never get back to where I am now. But if I keep pushing with the pain I can’t go full speed anymore so I’m probably losing my edge anyway. It’s a quandary!

  5. It doesn’t only come with age. Eric’s got flat feet, and they are giving him a terrible problem with his new job. We got him insoles, they help a bit but he needs orthopedic shoes. unfortunatly we can’t yet afford them. Anybody got any ideas to help him relieve the pain?

  6. Cortisone. I was amazed when I woke up this morning and stepped onto the floor. For the first time in well over a year it didn’t hurt. Of course that’s only a short term solution but I’m amazed at how well it worked.
