Widgets!

Filed under: Geek — don @ 3:50 pm

We’ve got Widgets on the blog now!  Ok, you can’t really tell but I certainly can from inside WordPress.  The new version of WP, 2.0x supports what they call widgets.  What they are is plugins that allow you to put all sorts of stuff on your sidebar VERY easily.  All you do is put the main widget file into the plugin directory and then activate it.  Once you do that you can put widget enabled plugins in the directory and it allows you to customize your sidebar without doing a line of html.  Then in the Presentation manager you just drag and drop whatever you want from one pane to the other and you have your sidebar however you want it.  Everything you see on my sidebar is part of the widgets and I can arrange them in any order.

Pretty cool for us Geeks.

Beta Tester, that’s me

Filed under: Geek — don @ 10:10 am

I’ve been busy the last few weeks doing something that mainly geeks would love. I’ve been a beta tester for a new version of Mattie’s Event Scripts. What is Event Scripts you might ask. The short answer is it’s a plugin for the Valve Source Engine, specifically for Counter Strike:Source. I’ve mentioned how I like playing Counter Strike in past posts. CS is a First Person Shooter(FSP) game where your character runs around a map shooting other peoples characters. I find it to be a good stress reliever after a hard day at work but mostly I enjoy the more geeky aspects of the game like building maps and making scripts that modify how the game is played.

That’s where Mattie’s Event Scripts come into play. Using ES you can do all kinds of things to change the game like allow you to change weapons that the game normally doesn’t allow or tell other players when someone dies. In fact there are almost unlimited possibilities to change the game because the company that developed Half Life and Half Life 2(of which CS is a modification) made it so you have access to modify almost everything in the game.

So Mattie created a new version of ES and he wanted some folks to beta test it before he released it to the public. That’s what I have been doing for about the last 3 weeks. Here’s a link to the page where Mattie thanks the beta testers. You’ll notice at the end of the first post he lists them(us).

So that’s what I’ve been up to and why you haven’t seen anything new here recently.

WordPress 2.0 and no spam

Filed under: Geek — don @ 7:48 pm

Since I upgraded to WP 2.0 I got rid of the CAPTCHA and still don’t have spam in the comments. That’s not to say people aren’t trying but 2.0 has a little program called Akismet that seems to do a really great job of catching spam. I think mine has caught close to 100 so far. If you are still using 1.5 I recommend upgrading and getting rid of your CAPTCHA.

Edit:  I just checked and Akismet has actually caught 143 so far.

My name is Don……. and I’m a geek

Filed under: Geek — don @ 9:06 am

I admit it. I am poweless over technology and my life has become Windowless. I can’t seem to satisfy my urge to install operating systems on my computer. Only another geek would understand.

It started with Red Hat(Fedora Core actually) then moved on to Mandrake. Next I was putting Suse on hda7. Can you imagine? HDA7! We shouldn’t forget that hda6 is the swap partition so maybe that one shouldn’t count.

Last night I downloaded the ISO of Gentoo. Nobody uses Gentoo but I’m thinking about it because I’ve still got about 80 GB free.

After that I’ll probably try Slackware again. They say once you’ve installed Slackware you’ve hit bottom. It doesn’t even boot into X! Command line only. With a BASH shell. And you have to create the initrd.

I realize I’ve got a problem but I think I can handle it. After all, I’m using Grub instead of LILO. You don’t have to rebuild Grub every time you add a /boot like you do with LILO.

But I do draw the line somewhere. I will NOT install FreeBSD!

I wonder if there’s a 12 step?

New phone

Betty and I had been using Samsung X427 phones for about the last 2 years. They were ok, nothing fancy. Small flip phones that had a pretty color screen but if you wanted more than the 5 pictures that came with them you had to pay to download new ones. They had the same deal with ringtones. New ones had to come from Cingular. They weren’t expensive but I hate paying even $.99 for a short tune.

Last week we got new Samsung D357 phones. Talk about features! They have the new Push-To-Talk feature that Cingular hopes will steal people away from Nextel. PTT is basically nationwide walkie-talkie. I’m not sure how much we’ll use it but you don’t get the great deal on the phone if you don’t get PTT.

They are also Bluetooth equipped. That means they can interface with any other Bluetooth device like a wireless headset, PDA, Camera, or PC. I got a USB Bluetooth adapter for my computer and learned some cool things I can do with the phones.

I can take any picture and turn it into wallpaper. I can take any song and turn it into a ringtone. When I say any I mean any that are capable of being digitized. Of course you can digitize any picture using a scanner and you can digitize any song using mp3 software so I guess that means “any”.

Another cool feature is you can assign a picture and ringtone to someone in your address book as a caller id. Now when Betty calls me it pops up her picture and plays “Barbie Girl” by Aqua(her idea). When I call her my picture pops up and it plays “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen(again, her idea).

The phone doesn’t have a camera but I don’t mind because Boeing doesn’t allow camera phones anyways. I’m pretty sure there are a lot of employees using them but I don’t see any reason to break the rules. If I want to take a picture I’ll use my camera.

So that’s the latest excitement in our lives.

Spellcheck in WordPress!

Filed under: Geek — don @ 11:44 pm

I’m trying out the new Google toolbar. It’s got spell check on it. Let’s see if it works. It works.

I’ve been reading a lot of family blogs and noticed one or two people seem to have a little trouble spelling words correctly. Heck I’ve been known to misspell a word or two. If you too are prone to this I suggest you install this little Firefox extension. It’s got a few other features besides the spellcheck. One is AutoLink which searches a web page for an address and if it finds one it lets you click and go to Google maps. Kinda cool.
