Anne MARBURYBorn 20 Jul 1591 at Alford, Lincolnshire, England, died Aug 1643 at Pelham Bay, NY, 52 years, buried at Hutchinson Farm, Westchester, NY Came to the colonies on the "Griffin" with her husband in 1634. She tried to escape the religious persecution of England by joining the Puritans. It didn't work. She was tried as a religious dissenter, found guilty and expelled from Massachusetts Bay Colony by John Winthrop She went with Roger Williams to RI, where he helped her purchase some land from the Indians. Her crime--saying that women were able to learn as well as men! She also had very unorthodox ideas for her day. She felt that each person had access to God, that one could say prayers other than those in the prayer book, that Jesus Christ could forgive sins, that salvation was through grace and not works, and many more ideas which she had learned by reading her Bible. This was at a time when women were thought to be of inferior mentality, put on earth only to serve their husbands, and raise the children, without having any thoughts except those of her husband. After her husband's death, she moved from RI to Pelham Bay, NY where the entire family, except Susanna, were murdered by the Indians. There are many web sites about her. There is a statue of her in the State House in Boston. Apparently, she had only one child after arriving in the colonies--Juriel, born in 1635/36.
