Lewis Benjamin FISH, son of Name filtered and N.N.. Born 17 May 1807 at Cortland, NY, died 24 Dec 1890 at Independence, Allegany, NY, 83 years I have put in some pictures of FISH men whose relationship I do not know. I "assume" that Seneca (with wife Polly) is a brother of Lewis B. My mother spoke of Uncle Seneky and Aunt Polliky, as she called them when she was a child. "Uncle Elias" may have been "Eliphaz", who was known to be a brother of Lewis B. "Aunt Ann" and "Uncle Allen" GIFFORD ?? could have been a sister of Lewis B. These pictures are in the FISH photo album. Lewis B. fathered 15 children, and was a carpenter all his life. All the children were born in Independence, Allegany, NY except Maria, born in Canandaigua, NY. In the 1850 Alle. Co Census, one daughter is listed as Mariah, age 5, and as Annett in the 1865 Alle Co census. The name of one child is missing. Dates are from a family record kept by Minerva. Lewis B. enlisted in the Civil War, having lied about his age (he was too old to serve legally) but he did not serve on active duty. However, he is buried in a grave marked with a Civil War marker. Francis Marion and Ransom were also enlisted men in that war. Some records are from the 1895 Allegany Co. Centennial History. Others are from family records. His application for pension states that he was in Co. G, 52nd Reg. NY State Volunteers. He did not know, at that time, the date of his enrollment, but was honorably discharged from the Harwood hospital near Washington, DC in the spring of 1865. He had lost his discharge certificate. He signed the papers with an "x", so apparently was illiterate. Copy of his discharge papers are in the top drawer of my translucent file cabinet. Elias Fish reported in the 1860 (or 1870) census that his mother was born in RI Married 22 May 1831 at Independence, Allegany, NY (50 years married) to: Fannie W. REMINGTON, daughter of Joseph Nichols REMINGTON and Ruth BRIGGS. Born 1 Oct 1812 at Chenango Co. NY, died 7 Nov 1881 at Independence, Allegany, NY, 69 years Newspaper clipping of her death states that she died of paralysis. The article follows: Died Nov. 7, 1881, of paralysis, Fanny, wife of Lewis B. Fish, aged 69 years and one month. Mrs. Fish has spent most of her life in Independence, Allegany, NY, and was a very hard working woman, until a few years since, she began to lose her mind, which difficulty increased until death. She has left a husband and quite a large family of children. Very little is known of Fanny. It is said that she died in the "poor house" in Angelica (an early county seat of Allegany Co) and was buried in Potter's Field. In various census records, she is listed as having been in Yates or Chenango County. Some census records list her as having been born in 1814. However, the record kept by Minerva FISH is probably more reliable and until prove otherwise, those dates will be considered official. Newspaper clipping of her death states that she died of paralysis. The article follws: Died Nov. Discharge in Baltimore, MD due to loss of right index finger. Injured while on picket duty in Fairfax Court House, VA, on or about the 20th day of Oct 1862. Record also states that he also suffered from sore ankles and erysipelas, chronic diarrhea and dyspepsia. (Very believable, considering the conditions under which those soldiers lived.) He received a disability discharge. Lived in Shongo, NY until 1877. Was a carpenter in Springboro, Crawford Co. PA Record from Bob Aho states that he was divorced from his first wife, Alma WHEATON, at Rugby, TN in the winter of 1880-81, married Flora Kinney in 1882. She died in 1894. Record also states that he was married for the third time in14 Oct 1897 in Beaver, PA, "but the lady was the wife of another man, and I did not know at the time.". (At least, he may have been honest!) His obituary states "A telegram was received here, Saturday, announcing the death of Reuben FISH at Springboro, PA. Mr. Fish was born here, May 31, 1838, being the son of Lewis B. Fish and his wife. A number of his years of life were spent in Shongo and from there he went to Springboro, PA. He was a soldier in the Civil War, having enlisted in 1862 in the 136th N. Y. Infantry. He is survived by a daughter, three sons and several brothers, one of whom is Ransom Fish of this place. Following is copied from Co. A, 146th Infantry reunion, which Bob Aho attended in August, 2007. Reuben Fish shot his finger off in the joint. He is doing well. You spoke of desertion in this company. There are two,Charles Harmon and H. Churchill. They were both from Cuba and Harmon was a sergeant and Churchill a corporal. They went while we were at Portage and after they had gotten their bounty, but I guess there has been nothing done towards getting them. One of them had $20 of A. Mead with which to buy a revolver, but Mead never received it. 6. All members of his family at the bedside at the end. Surrounded by his family last Thursday afternoon at 5:45 o'clock, Ransom FISH lapsed into the last long sleep. His demise came as a welcome release from months of illness following a shock. Born in Independence township, he was in the 85th year of his life. He was son of Lewis B. and Fanny REMINGTON FISH. At the age of 19 years he enlisted in the New York Dragoons on 13 Aug 1862, and served with the Northern army until honorable discharged on 19 July, 1865. He was in many battles. He was united in marriage with Miss Abbie COLLINS on 25 Nov. 1866, and she, together with three daughters, Mrs. D. G. Ranse, as he was familiarly known about town, was a carpenter of no mean ability, a man who took great pride in doing his work in workmanlike manner. He was a big, whole-souled man who had the respect of all who were privileged to know him. He was an active member of Sawyer Post, G.A.R., until it was disbanded and he made it a duty to (until this year) see that every soldier's grave bore its flag for Decoration Day, but this year he ws just entering his last rest and others had to take up his work where he laid it down. (My grandmother, Minnie FRAIR, often told that her father was too old to enlist, but lied about his age, and was in the War, and that one of her brothers was too young, but also lied about his age to go. This must have been the brother!) There was an Edson FISH in Washington Co, MN in 1880, single, age 28, working as a farm hand. He and his parents were born in NY. This could be the son of Lewis, however, he would have been 32 years old. December 20, 1887, he purchased 165 acres of land in Cass Co. ND. In 1891, he applied for his Civil War pension in MN.
