The apprehension is up a bit. Not really worried but it is general anaesthesia.

The night before surgery.. December 29, 2008

I go in tomorrow for the extraction. They will be pulling my front 4 teeth on top. That’s 7 through 10 for those who know that stuff. I’m a tiny bit apprehensive but not too much. I will be under for the actual surgery. I’m just a bit concerned about afterwards and if there will be much pain. I suspect there won’t be much but it is more than just extractions. They also use the cadaver bone to build up the bone in my jaw. That’s required because I did not take care of my teeth when younger.

I’ll update tomorrow if I’m able.

More than I figured December 10, 2008

Last night I went to my dentist to get the impressions taken for my partial. They actually call it a “flipper” which suggests to me it might not be the greatest thing for eating. We’ll see. But I digress.

When I got there I talked to the dentist about deciding to do what ever I needed to do to get my mouth in shape. He was happy to hear that and suggested I should go ahead and get a full set of X-Rays. I figured since I was there then why not. After the X-Rays they did the impression. I’ve always hated having things in my mouth but since I quit drinking a little over 5 years ago my gag reflex got less pronounced. I’m still not a fan but I was able to sit through the impression taking without anything more than a tiny gag with the upper. The lower didn’t bother me at all.

After that the dentist came in and looked at the X-Rays and said I had a couple of cavities. He suggested we might as well do one then so I said go ahead. That wasn’t too bad but I’m still not a fan of having a drill in my teeth. He’s a really good guy and waited for the novacaine to work a couple of times since it didn’t the first 2. I dislike the numbness afterwards but not as much as the pain during.

My partial(flipper) should be ready on Thursday but I don’t really want to do the pulling thing until after the 19th so I won’t have to wear it at work. I originally thought maybe I should do it on Friday but then remembered that’s my birthday. I think I’ll wait.

Getting an Impression for the partial December 9, 2008

I’ll be going to the regular dentist shortly to get an impression for my partial. Since they will be taking 4 teeth I am hoping the partial is easy to eat on. I’ve read various things on the net that had me a bit scared until I talked to the Oral Surgeon. I thought the temporary would be mainly cosmetic but he assures me I’ll be able to eat with it and probably keep it in most of the time. That’s what I’m hoping.

The start December 5, 2008

I’m getting dental implants so I created this blog/diary/journel to keep track of my thoughts and feelings for the next 6 to 8 months that it will take to finish them.

I’ve had lots of root canals and caps and cavities filled and even went to an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal but this will be the most extensive work on my teeth to date.  I did have a root removed through the jaw once but that was pretty simple compared to this.

I will start it off with the story of my teeth and how I got to this point.  Hopefully someone younger will see themselves and learn what I could not.

In the words of Bette Davis, “Fasten your seat belts.  It’s going to be a bumpy night!”
