Day 3

Filed under: Personal — don @ 9:25 pm

Most of the stuff I’ve read says day 3 is one of the worst.  If that’s the case then this should be a cakewalk.  Ok, it was a little worse than the first 2 but only because the cravings got a little stronger.  I had about 3 times where I felt a pretty strong urge but as they say, “the urge will pass whether you have a smoke or not”.  It did.

I’m wondering when the good stuff starts to happen.  I know it’s still too early for anything now but I hope within the next few days I at least notice a change.  I’ve heard the coughing should increase while you’re cleaning out your lungs but so far, not really.

I’m taking Betty to see Bridge to Tarabithia this weekend.  It will be strange to not rush out afterwards.

Quit Day

Filed under: Personal — don @ 10:42 pm

In about 20 minutes I will be 24 hours smoke free.  I can’t say enough about how Chantix takes away the physical cravings.  It does not, however take away the psychological ones.  I didn’t sleep well last night and I’m not sure if it was taking the pill at 10pm or just the anxiety of knowing today was the day.

I’ll be glad when the cravings subside.  I understand day 3 is the worst so I’ve still got that to look forward to.  One day at a time.

Quit day minus 1

Filed under: Personal — don @ 6:21 pm

I’m quitting!  Smoking that is.  I figure it’s time since I’m 53 and my health isn’t getting any better.

I’ve been thinking about it for several months now.  I really started thinking hard when after my  last cold went away my cough didn’t.  I had thought about doing it over the holidays but realized that’s probably one of the higher stress times.

About 2 weeks ago I enrolled in Boeing’s program called Free and Clear.  They provide you with stop smoking guides, a quit coach, and patches or gum if you want to try one of those.  They also recommend 2 different prescription drugs if you want to try one of those.  The drugs are Zyban and Chantix.  Zyban is actually an antidepressant which has worked well as a smoking cessation aid.  That’s how Betty quit several years ago.

Chantix on the other hand is brand new and is actually made as a smoking cessation aid.  That’s what I decided to try.  It works by reducing the cravings for nicotine.  I’ve been taking it for a week now and I can tell the cravings will be much less than if I wasn’t taking it.

Please don’t comment that you “are proud of me”.  If I successfully quit I’ll be proud enough for myself but I’ve always disliked getting a pat on the back for doing something I should have done a long time ago.  Kind of makes me feel like a puppy.  Well wishes are welcome though.

HDDVR – DirecTV style

Betty has had an HD DirecTV box for a while now and she loves it.  It’s based on Tivo so it’s easy to use and she was able to go from my first Tivo hand-me-down to this with no trouble.

I decided if I’ve got a 55″ TV I should at least see how it looks with HD so I started checking DirecTV to see what they had.  They no longer offer the Tivo based unit that Betty has but have created their own.  They must have paid Tivo a pretty good chunk of money to get out of the deal they had with them.

The new DVR(HR20) works very well but it’s just not Tivo.  The main thing I miss is being able to 30 second skip.  It has a 30 second FF but it isn’t instant like Tivo.  It also won’t handle off-air HD for another month when DirecTV will roll out a software upgrade.  They forgot to mention that at Circuit City when I bought it but it didn’t take long to find out.

It’s not a bad machine but I did get spoiled with Tivo.

The trip

So we left LA on a Northwest flight Thursday the 1st. We arrived in Milwaukee around 6:30 and it took a lot longer to get our car than it would if I had used National. We rented from Hertz because I wanted a Mustang. It took close to 30 minutes for the people in front of me and then us. They are probably fine if you have their Gold club but otherwise go somewhere else.

We drove south to Kenosha on the 94. It only takes about 30 minutes. We got to the hotel and checked in and called Joce. She was out getting stuff for the wedding with Eric but we decided to meet for a late dinner when they finished. She told me she wanted to go to this new place close to the hotel. I thought it was a steakhouse but it ended up being a noodle place. Joce is a vegitarian and likes the noodles and veggies. The rest of us ordered meat on the meal. Decent food but I would rather have a steak.

The next morning we got up and decided to go on the Jelly Belly tour. It’s only a distribution place but they have billions of jelly beans in the warehouse. They drive you around in a little train on wheels and tell you the Jelly Belly story. Because they have food you have to wear the hat. That’s what I’m wearing in the picture. It’s kind of interesting and they give you a bag of beans at the end. One funny thing we learned is the beans that don’t come out right are called “belly flops”. You can buy 2 – 2lb bags for $8. We didn’t and I wish we had.

That evening we went to the rehersal and then back to the lodge to finish decorating. We were done about 12pm but that was only 10 to Betty and I. We went back to the hotel and went to bed.

Saturday morning we got up and actually had time to eat the modified continental breakfast. They also had a waffle maker, sausage, and biscuits and gravy. The waffles were very good. The other stuff not so much.

Then we headed to the wedding. Not a lot to say about that except the ring bearer was a tad too young to know what he needed to do. You can see him being carried by Gary in a few pictures. The weather was great and the ceremony only lasted about 15 minutes. That’s the right length as far as I’m concerned.

After the wedding we went to the reception. Again nothing more to say that you can’t see in the pictures. We left about 9pm right after Joce and Eric. Not much reason for us to stay since neither of us drink and the only people we knew were Judi’s family. I like them all but I’d already spent enough time with them.

The next day we had breakfast at the hotel again and headed off for the plane. I stopped to get gas so we wouldn’t be charged $6/gallon. I found out if you try to top off a Mustang it will overflow and make your shoe smell really bad. Just what I needed before getting on a cramped plane for 4 hours. We had an hour layover in Las Vegas where we not only changed planes but airlines as well. Predictably we didn’t have Betty’s bag when we got to LA. They found it and brought it to us last night.

It was a really great weekend and I was very happy to see Jocelyn. She’s grown up a lot. She works at United States Bank in Kenosha. Eric is planning on finding a better job than the YMCA where he’s working now.

All in all a fun time.
